This lyric was written in August of 1994 by Roy Stucky.

For me at least, the Holocaust has served as the symbol of evil's existence. But I never held much hope for being able to treat such a vast topic in something as tiny as a song. Then I watched an interview with a survivor whose question, "Where are my parents?" was answered with great laughter by a guard who pointed to the smoke drifting over their heads and out of the camp. "There are your parents," he said. There was the unifying symbol. The rest of the creation was basically following the smoke.

Believe it or not, I did not see Schindler's List until renting the tape in mid-1995.  I have to admit I nearly fell off my chair when the movie opened with the smoke of the snuffed candle and smokestack.
