Red Moon Rising
© 1994, Roy Stucky

There is a red moon rising,
Slightly ahead of time,
And I think on the night when its real,
When the Lamb has broken the seal
To give people a dreadfilled sign.

The eye of the night is bloody and cold
As earth pollutes the light spun gold
From the furnace of the sun -
Mocked by dwarfs with guns.

There is a red moon rising,
Gazing upon our pride,
And I weep for the blinded eye,
For the rolling back of the sky
That lets Heaven and Hell collide.

For those who live and are not living dead
The end of time will be a joy instead
Of the terror shriek from those who bought the lie
That only void awaits us when we die.

There is a red moon rising,
Slightly ahead of time,
And I long for the day sorrow ends,
For the Life where Love transcends
Our senses' dim outline.

This song is about the mingled sorrow and joy of looking ahead to the return of the King.  Sorrow because for many that will be the day they are lost for eternity.  Joy because for those who have accepted Jesus that day will be the death of Death, the destruction of pain.

When God turned the Nile river to blood before Pharaoh, He was striking down an Egyptian god, for the Nile was sacred to them.  In doing so He showed them His power over what they thought deity.

As seen in the book of Revelation, when God makes the moon as blood He will be striking down a god of astrology, demonstrating to those who look to the stars for guidance that the One Who made them from nothing reigns over His creation.

This is one of the many ways God will demonstrate His utter power over every god humans revere.  This process is important because by doing so God removes every obstruction people have put in front of their eyes.  With every human god destroyed, everyone will be forced to confront God directly.  From that moment on, there will be no middle ground between worshiping and rejecting God.  After this there will be no excuse.

"Slightly ahead of time" is that we are not in the Tribulation yet.

"Night when its real" is that this red moon is merely a reminder of the time when the moon will really be as blood.

"Broken the seal" is a reference to the seven seals in the book of Revelation.

"Dreadfilled sign" is that God's demonstrations of wrath are signs to those on the Earth that they are facing One far beyond their might, to Whom they owe repentance.  It is also a sign of the madness of that time that people who then cannot avoid knowing God is real will curse Him instead of bowing their knee.

"The eye of the night is bloody and cold" is that this present moon looks on a world filled with bloodshed and dead hearts of stone.

"Earth pollutes the light" is that the color of the present moon's light is not red.  This color comes from atmospheric trash distorting it's light.

"Furnace of the sun" is that the moon's light does not belong to the moon, but rather came from the production of the sun.  The gold is not only the color of that light, but also a reference to the image of God being a refining fire that will burn all dross from the gold of existence.

"Dwarfs with guns" is how we must appear to God in our pathetic technological arrogance.

"Gazing upon our pride" is that these little creatures with their guns will be so insane with arrogance as to think themselves a match for God.

"Blinded eye" is an image of this present moon looking upon our world being put out, that it not see the destruction, and of the gross blindness that will fall upon the hearts of humanity.

"Rolling back of the sky" is Jesus coming in power and glory.

"Heaven and Hell collide" will be literal at Armagedon.

"Those who live" are the born again Christians we have chosen to serve Jesus.

"Living dead" is that unbelievers are dead in their sins even while they live.

"End of time will be a joy" for those who rise to meet Jesus in the air.

"Terror shriek" is the wail from those who rejected Jesus when they see Him coming in power and glory, a conqueror.  At that moment they will realize the magnitude of their folly in spitting on God's offer of grace and mercy.

"Only void awaits us when we die" is the lie that this material world is all there is, and that humans die like animals, utterly ceasing to exist when they breathe their last.

"Day sorrow ends" is that on the New Earth there will be no pain.

"Life where Love transcends" is that existence on the New Earth where we will live with God face to face instead of through the dark mirror of our finite senses.

"I saw when he had opened the sixth seal, there was a great earthquake.  The sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood.  The stars of heaven fell to the earth even as a fig drops it's green fruit when shaken by a mighty wind.  Heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled up, and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.  The kings of the earth, the great men, the rich men, the chief captains, the mighty men, and every bondman and every free man hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains."

"They said to the mountains, 'Fall on us, and hide us from the face of Him that sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb, for the great day of His wrath is come, and who will be able to stand?' "
Revelation 6:12-17

"Now at any rate he is as bad as an Orc, and just an enemy. He deserves death."

"Deserves it! I daresay he does. Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment. For even the very wise cannot see all ends. I have not much hope that Gollum can be cured before he dies, but there is a chance of it."

This lyric was written in August of 1994.

I was driving home through the open country one night after a visit to Mike's house when I noticed the moon that was rising was blood red.  With the winds and heat of this time of year, such a sight is not as uncommon as one might imagine.  I thought of course about Revelation.  I also thought about how the light from the sun is not tainted, nor is it reddened by the moon's reflecting, but that the premonitory color comes from the debris of our atmosphere.

In the allegory this song comes after the young worker has led those who would listen to the surface.  When they emerge from the ground, they find a windswept spring night.  The young worker walks off by himself to think on all the events, on those who were saved and those who remain lost.  The moon rises, it's light red through the heavy atmosphere.

On the epiphany level this represents the visitation of wrath the world will undergo during the Tribulation.

premonitory = giving warning
