Madcap Nominee
© 2006, Roy Stucky

Today after today I live inside the life I sought.
The roadies now report the slipping halo has been caught.
The marketplace has nuzzled up and cut me off a share
Which they believe entitles them to track me anywhere.

The instant of exposure hangs my face above abyss.
Some precious mental soldiers ask for nothing more than this.
The audience is screaming though they're not about to fall.
I think I must be dreaming of a Hades concert hall.

I dance along the brink -
The Madcap Nominee.
What do you think
When you look at me?
Where is the link
Turning stooge into sage?
What do you think
Of the man on the stage?

Who could know the carpet's magic cut both ways?
That traps would crash the party dressed up just like praise?
Strangers ask for things no honest man would yield.
Soon the contact's taking place behind a shield.

I dance along the brink -
The Madcap Nominee.
What do you think
When you look at me?
Where is the link
Turning stooge into sage?
What do you think
Of the man on the stage?

The crumbled lips of precipice have twisted down a frown.
I clutch the merest crevice to regain some solid ground.
Some fans are far too flimsy to withstand the slightest blow.
The venue quickly empties since my rescue spoiled the show.

I dance along the brink -
The Madcap Nominee.
What do you think
When you look at me?
Where is the link
Turning stooge into sage?
What do you think
Of the man on the stage?
